Burnaby RCMP’s Traffic Services, alongside 10 partner agencies, identified 58% of commercial vehicles inspected as out of service (OOS) during enforcement operations throughout the Lower Mainland in British Columbia last year.

According to a news release, authorities conducted 50 operations in 2023, inspecting 1,715 trucks, resulting in 999 being deemed OOS. The RCMP reported 3,974 violations recorded and issued 1,298 tickets.

Corporal Mike Kalanj of the Burnaby RCMP commented in the release, “Although the percentage of trucks placed out of service has slightly decreased this past year, there remains significant room for improvement in road safety.”

In 2022, authorities inspected 1,706 commercial vehicles, with 1,053 (62%) deemed out of service. The RCMP reported conducting 43 enforcement operations, uncovering 4,552 violations and issuing 1,714 tickets.

In 2023, Burnaby RCMP’s Traffic Services independently conducted 41 enforcement operations within Burnaby. During these operations, 811 trucks were inspected, with 541 (67%) marked as out of service (OOS). Additionally, authorities recorded 2,591 violations and issued 1,169 tickets.

In October 2023, a one-year pilot project commenced, dedicating a police officer solely to lead the detachment’s commercial vehicle safety efforts. This initiative aimed to bolster education, enforcement, and compliance measures.

This year, Burnaby RCMP plans to capitalize on its new pilot program and expand educational initiatives as part of its comprehensive strategy to enhance road safety.
